Rigby and Rigby Named Finalist at the World Architecture Festival in Miami

Rigby and Rigby proudly participated as a finalist at the World Architecture Festival (WAF), held this year in Miami—the first time the globally renowned event has taken place in North America. Centred around the theme “Hearts and Minds,” the 2025 festival explored the intersection of emotion and intellect in the design process, celebrating architecture that is both thoughtful and deeply human.

WAF typically receives thousands of entries each year from leading studios worldwide, making the competition one of the most respected platforms in the industry. Amid this highly competitive field, Rigby and Rigby’s Baan Krating project was shortlisted in the Best Future House category, advancing to the final group of just 13 projects. Although the category ultimately went to another practice, reaching the final shortlist offered the team exceptional international exposure and affirmed the studio’s presence among the world’s leading architectural practices. The festival also provided a valuable opportunity to reconnect with former colleagues and engage with peers shaping the future of global design.

At the heart of the Baan Krating proposal is a sensitive, context-driven architectural response. Careful consideration was given to the selection of materials, ensuring the design remains authentic to its landscape and cultural setting. The buildings are primarily constructed from exposed steel and timber framing, using FSC-approved native Thai timber alongside local limestone from Khao Yai for the hardscape and ground-floor stone. Windows incorporate recycled aluminium content, while a natural copper roof will evolve gracefully over time.

The intention behind these choices is to create an architecture that ages honestly and beautifully. As Juhani Pallasmaa observes, natural materials carry their history—weathering, wearing, and patinating in ways that enrich the experience of a place. The silver timber and the patinated copper will allow the home to become a true product of its environment, embedding it more deeply into the surrounding landscape as the years pass.

The design layout emphasises togetherness, connection, and shared family experiences. Interiors and outdoor spaces are arranged to encourage interaction, celebrate daily activity, and maintain a strong relationship with nature.

In the spirit of Tom Kundig’s belief that architectural success lies in resilience, adaptability, and authenticity, Baan Krating embodies a thoughtful response to both purpose and place.

Being recognised at WAF marks a meaningful milestone for Rigby and Rigby—one that reinforces the studio’s commitment to creating beautiful timeless, contextually grounded architecture.
