In The Studio - Sustainable Interior Design
Rigby & Rigby’s 3D Designer, Lucy Marsh, has been researching sustainable design products for inclusion in an upcoming Wellness certified project.
In the simplest of terms, sustainability is the ability to sustain something, the International Interior Designers Association defines it as ‘A state or process that can be maintained’. We haven’t always been unsustainable in the design world, consumerism pushed us to this way of life, over the last few years there has been a shift in attitude and visible efforts from many to get back to protecting our environment. This is a challenge for us to meet consumer needs in a different way – minimise resource consumption, avoid toxic or harmful substances and use solar energy where possible to name a few.
Areas to be aware of:
- What materials are being used?
- Where do they come from?
- How are the products produced?
- How are they transported?
- How you dispose of waste?
- Are you avoiding toxins?
- Are you avoiding non-recyclable materials?
- Avoiding quick fashion opting for a long lifespan in the design
'Sustainable design is important to understand and work towards reducing the negative environmental impact. Throughout the design and build process, we can do many small, effective things to achieve a lower impact and carbon footprint. If everyone approached design with this kind of forward-thinking attitude, buildings would be of higher performance and last longer, air quality would increase, and our eco-system would start to heal.' - Lucy Marsh, Junior 3D VisualiserSustainable Interior Design selection:
